Accretion in the Early Outer Solar System
نویسنده
چکیده
We describe calculations of the evolution of an ensemble of small planetesimals in the outer solar system. In a solar nebula with a mass of several times the Minimum Mass Solar Nebula, objects with radii of 100–1000 km can form on timescales of 10–100 Myr. Model luminosity functions derived from these calculations agree with current observations of bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune (Kuiper Belt objects). New surveys with current and planned instruments can place better constraints on the mass and dynamics of the solar nebula by measuring the luminosity function at red magnitudes, mR ≥ 28. متن کاملLow abundances of heavy elements in the solar outer layers: comparisons of solar models with helioseismic inversions
Context. Recent solar photospheric abundance analyses have led to a significant reduction of the metal abundances compared to the previous determinations. (Z/X)S is 30% smaller, down to 0.0165. The solar models computed with standard opacities and diffusion processes using these new abundances give poor agreement with helioseismic inversions for the sound-speed profile, the surface helium abund...
متن کاملOuter Irregular Satellites of the Planets and Their Relationship with Asteroids, Comets and Kuiper Belt Objects
Outer satellites of the planets have distant, eccentric orbits that can be highly inclined or even retrograde relative to the equatorial planes of their planets. These irregular orbits cannot have formed by circumplanetary accretion and are likely products of early capture from heliocentric orbit. The irregular satellites may be the only small bodies remaining which are still relatively near th...
متن کاملTowards a Deterministic Model of Planetary Formation I: a Desert in the Mass and Semi Major Axis Distributions of Extra Solar Planets
In an attempt to develop a deterministic theory for planet formation, we examine the accretion of cores of giant planets from planetesimals, gas accretion onto the cores, and their orbital migration. We adopt a working model for nascent protostellar disks with a wide variety of surface density distributions in order to explore the range of diversity among extra solar planetary systems. We evalu...
متن کاملOrigin of a partially differentiated Titan
Accretional temperature profiles for Saturn’s large moon Titan are used to determine the conditions needed for accretion to avoid global melting as a function of the timing, duration, and nebular conditions of Titan’s accretion. We find that Titan can accrete undifferentiated in a ‘‘gas-starved” disk even with modest quantities of ammonia mixed in with its ices. Simulations of impact-induced co...
